For thousands of years, human beings have been surrounded by far more natural energy than they'll ever need. Our mission is to help them harness it - saving money and the environment in the process.
To change the course of time, take action now
Looking up to see three majestic manta rays swimming above him wasn’t the most memorable thing about Martim Cunha’s scuba-diving trip to the Maldives in 2019. What struck the Portuguese engineering student on his bucket-list adventure was the constant hum of diesel generators in the background.
Like the over 65 million people worldwide who live in small island developing nations (SIDS), Maldivians rely on diesel for over 90 per cent of their energy. This is expensive, unsustainable, and damaging to their pristine ecosystems - further fueling the climate crisis.
This fact seemed unbelievable, as Maldivians were surrounded by an abundance of energy, with sunshine, wind, and waves all around them. If only they could harness it, he thought.
The limited landmass of SIDS, like the Maldives, means that traditional energy solutions, like solar and wind, aren't feasible. Energy poverty and energy security issues run rampant on the 58 island nations that make up SIDS worldwide. Their fossil fuel reliance further worsens the global Climate Crisis that they are disproportionately impacted by. These Climate Vulnerable nations also find themselves on the front lines of rising sea levels and microplastics drowning ocean ecosystems.
Martim's love for the Maldivian people, culture, islands, and sea life propelled him to take action and start to think differently about renewable energy. Back in England, he studied Aeronautics with Spacecraft Engineering at Imperial College London. There, he recruited his technical team and manufactured the prototype for his first renewable energy solution for Climate Vulnerable communities.
Two years after Cunha’s first dive trip to the Maldives, Aeon Energy was born. Named after Aion, the greek deity who represents the cyclic nature of time, Aeon Energy embodies its truth that to create a new future, we must address our old ways of thinking and take action in the present moment.
In 2023, Aeon’s first net-positive renewable solution comes to market.
